Similac alimentum ready to feed was very well tolerated by both. The RTF has zero corn ingredients; was told from gastro. It has a better taste and consistency than the powder. The thicker liquid helped with their reflux as well. They thrived and took right away. Powdered Alimentum was refused as was nutramigen powder. Try the ready to feed liquid if you are having issues.

He is still spitting up a lot and he seems to be a little more gassy. I guess I should stick to it for a couple weeks before trying Nutramigen? Also, do they both have the same horrible smell?

Babies tolerate the ready to feed versions better because they contain less casein, soy/soy oils, etc. I honestly feel its false advertising to call them by the same names. We use Alimentum RTF and it’s the ONLY one my baby has been able to tolerate.

After a week of not seeing results and our baby refusing to eat we contacted our gastro about switching. They said we could try the Alimentum but would recommend waiting til after 2 weeks.
Day 12 he finally started eating over 20oz again (previously 28-32 oz) and the projectile spit up ended. These formulas are like water so we went from size 2 nipples to preemies or 1s depending on the nipple.
I’d recommend picking one and sticking with it for a couple of weeks.
Unless I missed it the article should also mention the different sugars being used in the formulas. The Nut uses corn syrup and the Ali uses sucrose.

Just FYI – Soy “oil” as is in Nutramigen is different than soy protein. Nutramigen still won’t affect babies with soy protein intolerances.

How did the switch go for you newborn? I am in the same boat, my first child was fine on almintium but my second child who is 6 weeks old is very fussy and having lots of gas. I was also considering switching to nutgramium.

It’s one of the first ingredients on the label actually.

Also, would like to say- I’ve used Alimentum on my son (now 6), and it worked great. My newborn now is still incredibly gassy on it.
We will be trying Nutramigen starting tomorrow.

And one last note to anyone reading this… if possible, start your child on powder! It’s less expensive and tastes differently to baby. Many friends swear the same is true, so try powder first so you’re not stuck in my boat of buying a quart of premodern formula per day!
