Mission Statement
The Pete Newell Tall Women's Basketball Camp goal is to continue to do what Pete Newell did his whole life-to teach the fundamentals and footwork of the game of basketball to young players. The ability to read a defense and react to the defender's position is a key component of the Pete Newell method. The part to whole teaching method is used beginning with a 1 on none to 1 on 1, 2 on 2, and so on.
Camp History
The Pete Newell Tall Women's Basketball Camp began in 2001 at California State University, Monterey Bay. Pete Newell and Bill McClintock had talked for years about starting a women's camp just like the Big Man's Camp Pete Newell had been doing for 25 years. When McClintock returned to coaching at CSUMB the dream became a reality. Now after a decade of teaching the list of alums is impressive.
The staff includes basketball names like Ann Meyers of UCLA, a four time All-American and basketball Hall of Famer, Pete Newell Jr., a highly successful Santa Cruz California high school coach, as well as Bill McClintock, Christen Roper, Wendy Anae, Mandy Carver, Ruthie Bolton, Chloe Kerr and Nadia Parker.
Members of our teaching staff are available for clinics nationwide.
